CLEVELAND (AP) — At some point in the next few days, Terry Francona will hop on his celebrated scooter, zip along the underground concrete concourses of Progressive Field and leave the ballpark he’s called home the past 11 seasons for the final time. His ride is nearly over.Although he hasn’t made it official — and true to form, Francona was adamant about not pulling the spotlight away from the Guardians during their playoff push — the 64-year-old manager has indicated he’ll step down after this season, perhaps the most challenging of his run with Cleveland.Slowed by major health issues in recent years, the personable, popular Francona may be stepping away, but not before leaving a lasting imprint as a manager and as one of the game’s most beloved figures.Adored by players. Respected by peers. Cherished by fans.Born into baseball, he’s been a lifer. As as kid, he grew up in Pennsylvania hoping to follow his father Tito’s footsteps into the big leagues, a...

Dolphins’ McDaniel skirts shot at history and Raiders’ McDaniels opts for a field goal mystery

Published Sun, 16 Feb 2025 16:35:42 GMT

Take a bow, Mike McDaniel, for taking a knee. Miami’s coach decided to forego a field goal that would have allowed the Dolphins to break Washington’s record 72-point game set in 1966 against the Giants. Instead, he had his offense go into victory formation on fourth down at the Denver 27 in the final minute of their 70-20 shellacking of the Broncos on Sunday.McDaniel’s magnanimous gesture allowed the Broncos to at least avoid infamy to go with the insult of becoming the first team to surrender 350 yards and five touchdowns both passing and rushing in the same game.“It would have been cool,” McDaniel said of scoring more points than anyone in the 104-year history of the NFL. “But … that’s not really what I’m about. I will be fine getting second-guessed by turning down NFL records. That’s fine.”Fins fans wanted the record, loudly voicing their displeasure that the Dolphins didn’t match the all-time NFL record established by the Chicago B...

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The most unstoppable play in the NFL was on full display under the bright lights Monday night. When the Philadelphia Eagles need a yard, they often resort to the “tush push. ”Quarterback Jalen Hurts lines up under center with two or three players behind him. He takes the snap, the offensive line surges forward and Hurts gets a big push from behind. It almost always works. Even when it doesn’t, the Eagles do it again.Hurts was stopped short of the end zone on third down from the 1 in the third quarter of a 25-11 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Monday night. So Philadelphia went for it on fourth down. Tight end Dallas Goedert, running back D’Andre Swift and wide receiver A.J. Brown provided the push from behind and Hurts crossed the goal line for a touchdown that made it 20-3.In the fourth quarter, the Eagles did it successfully for the fourth time against the Buccaneers to extend a drive that chewed up the final 9:22.Philadelphia had tremendous success with ...

Biden will join the UAW strike picket line. Experts can’t recall the last time a president did that

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden’s decision to stand alongside United Auto Workers pickets on Tuesday on the 12th day of their strike against major carmakers underscores an allegiance to labor unions that appears to be unparalleled in presidential history.Experts in presidential and U.S. labor history say they cannot recall an instance when a sitting president has joined an ongoing strike, even during the tenures of the more ardent pro-union presidents such as Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry Truman. Theodore Roosevelt invited labor leaders alongside mine operators to the White House amid a historic coal strike in 1902, a decision that was seen at the time as a rare embrace of unions as Roosevelt tried to resolve the dispute.Lawmakers often appear at strikes to show solidarity with unions, and during his 2020 Democratic primary campaign, Biden and other presidential hopefuls joined a picket line of hundreds of casino workers in Las Vegas who were pushing for a contract with ...
